Kay Gehring is a special education teacher and has a deep compassion for all children. She is especially drawn to children who struggle in their quest for reading. It is her dream to help children learn to love stories, whether they are read to them or they read them on their own. She
delights in seeing a child find that one book that unlocks the door for a lifetime of reading. Kay helps children step through that door that can take them to places they can only imagine!
Kay started her writing career when she became a grandma. She thought if she felt so passionate about children and their interest in reading, she wanted to be able to leave a part of her imagination on pages for her
grandchildren to enjoy. Sometimes she has a humorous story to tell and sometimes a heartfelt story, but all her stories are filled with a part of her. It is her desire that all who read her books will find enjoyment!
Describe Your Desk:
I have a new little roll top desk I bought with the intention of using it for writing more books. It fits nicely in the corner of my living room.
What's the Story behind your latest book?
Shiloh, my grandson, is a 7-year-old that likes adventures. He said something to me once about the trees coming to life. When Shiloh told me that, it made me think about when Phillip, my youngest son, was about three years old. He told me the trees in the front yard were smiling at him. He said sometimes they smiled and sometimes they were mad. I decided I could turn their imaginations with the trees into a story about adventures through conquering bullying with love and kindness.
What is the greatest Joy of Writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is sharing my imagination with anyone that decides to open my book and read.
What are you working on next?
My next book is going to be about “a troubled squirrel” I think.
What is your writing process?
I usually get an idea for a book and I try to sit down and start writing at the time it comes into my head. I usually have a computer close by and start writing immediately.
Who are your favorite Authors?
I have several favorite authors. Children’s book authors are: John R. Erickson, Ben Mikaelson, Jerry Spinelli, and Arron Reynolds. Adult authors are James Patterson and Janet Evanovich.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am usually drawn to a good mystery. I love a real mystery that isn’t easily solved, but I also love a humorous mystery too.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the very small, rural town of Oxford, Kansas. I was fortunate to grow up in the era when as a kid it was safe to run around barefoot throughout the town where I could meet up with friends. There were many nights when the neighborhood kids would get together after dark and catch fireflies. I have great memories that allow me to draw from to write.
When did you first start writing?
Actually, my first attempt at writing is a story I would like to share with you. I wrote it two years ago for my grandson, Shiloh. So I guess my first attempt at writing was 2015. It is titled Pig E. Bank.
Do you remember the first story you ever read and the impact it had on you?
I remember my mom reading stories to me from our childcraft books. I loved being read to at a young age and then I was very excited when I learned to read the Dick and Jane books in kindergarten.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have a passion for teaching and enjoy seeing the children everyday. I also have a very incredible life, filled with people I love dearly and that love me!
